Human hair grows from the scalp in small bundles called follicular units that consist of about 1-4 (full thickness) hair follicles, plus 1-2 finer hairs, oil glands. On the surface of the scalp, the tiny groups of hairs appear to grow together. When follicular units are viewed under a microscope, individual follicular units can be seen as well-formed structures just beneath the skin.
Hormones in the lower part of the back of the head are different from the hormones on the crown of the head and normally keep this hair from falling out. With hair transplantation surgery, small groups of follicles are carefully removed from a donor site in that part of the scalp. Hair is removed through small thin football shaped incision is made and removed from this area of the scalp. The doctor divides the follicular units into naturally occurring groups, removing and discarding the excess fatty tissues and skin. These small grafts are then meticulously inserted into the bald or thinning areas of the scalp. Once inserted, the transplanted hairs do not need suturing, heal quickly, and soon become undetectable once the new hair begins to grow. What about after the procedure?
Hair transplant procedures takes only a couple of hours and are performed using local or "twilight" anesthesia, on an out-patient basis. Depending upon the degree of hair loss and desired density, the transplantation may involve 700-3500 grafts. During the procedure, there is typically little or no pain. In fact, most patients remain awake and can talk, listen to music or watch movies and television.
Some people are concerned with how they will look after the surgery. Often, a light bandage/dressing will be placed on the scalp in order to keep the grafts snug and secure overnight. In most cases, it is removed the next day. Although there may be some initial redness and swelling as small crusts from on the grafts, these are shed in very little time after the procedure. Most patients resume normal activities, such as work, the next day.
The new hair transplant roots will remain dormant for approximately 6-12 weeks, after which the new hairs will begin to grow. After a period of four to six months, 90-100% of the grafts survive transplantation to blend perfectly with the surrounding scalp. The transplanted hair will continue to grow for a lifetime.
Understanding Hair Loss

Throughout history, hair has represented power, prestige and confidence. Even today, hair remains an important symbol of health, vitality and self-esteem. Yet, according to the American Hair Loss Association, by the age of 35, two-thirds of American men will experience appreciable hair loss. By the age of 50, approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair.
Although there are many potential causes of hair loss, the most common form of hair loss--androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness)--accounts for nearly 95% of all hair loss. Male pattern hair loss is determined by a combination of heredity and hormones, including testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The tendency for hair loss can be genetically inherited from either side of the family.
For women hair loss is different. Up to 40% of hair loss sufferers are women. Although hair loss for both men and women is influenced by hormones, women generally experience thinning in no particular pattern or part of the scalp. Also, in many cases, women experience patchy hair loss due to stress, poor nutrition, hormonal changes during pregnancy or due to certain eating disorders.
Hair Transplant Surgery Where your own hair is transplanted from a donor section to the hair loss area, offering a permanent, natural solution.
Medications may offer a non surgical solution to slow or prevent further hair loss. For example Rogaine can be applied directly to the scalp and is available with a prescription. Rogaine can be used by both men and women. Another medicine Propecia is available in a prescription pill; however, it is used only for men. Often, Propecia is used in conjunction with and as a complement to surgical hair restoration.
Laser Therapy Using an FDA approved laser light on the scalp and hair follicles provides a high level of light, which is used by hair and scalp cells to assist in the normal chemical processes performed by those cells. Laser light improves hair quality, strength and thickness without surgery and is used by itself or in conjunction with other treatments.
